  What is felt 
Felt is a fabric made of wool fibers or animal hair matted together by steam and pressure without spinning, weaving or knitting.    Such fibers include wool, fur and certain other hair fibers that mat together under appropriate conditions because of their peculiar structure and high degree of crimp.

Felting needles are used to commercially felt without soap and water.  While machines employ hundreds or thousands of these needles, they are handy individually for the felting artist.  Wonderful for details. 

The average needle is three-sided, with a very sharp point that has miniscule barbs on it.  The needle is punched repeatedly through the fiber, and the barbs mix the fibers, locking them together.  We use a pillow stuffed as the working base.  Keep fingers well out of the way of the needles.   

Wet felting wool is a fun thing to do. It is, also, a very clean thing to do. You wash your fleece while felting it...getting two steps done in one.
